Traditionally, red envelopes are given to children or loved ones by their family members wishing them prosperity and good luck in the coming year. The red envelopes (traditionally known as hong bao in Mandarin, lai see in Cantonese, or li xi in Vietnamese) have money enclosed inside of them and are believed to bring happiness and luck to the recipients.
Each year within the 12-year cycle is represented by a Chinese zodiac animal, and characteristics are associated with each zodiac birth year. The snake symbolizes wisdom, charm, elegance and transformation, and people born in the Year of the Snake are seen as intuitive, strategic and intelligent.
