Blue or Black or Get It Back
To ensure proper processing of your checks, only use blue or black ink when writing and endorsing checks. Checks that do not image well will likely be returned to you.
In 2003, the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check21 Act) was passed in an effort to enhance check processing efficiency by relying on advanced technologies. As a result of those efforts, the majority of checks now clear electronically. The Federal Reserve has issued guidance that checks should be written in blue or black ink since the image of the check is the foundation for electronic processing.
Although the blue or black ink is not yet a hard and fast rule, it is a best practice that:
• Avoids checks being rejected by the Federal Reserve during processing.
• Avoids checks being processed for the wrong amount
• Ensures all check images can provide proof of payment.
